In its pursuit of promoting conservation and preservation, West Orange NJ’s Turtle Back Zoo is planning to develop a Sea Turtle Recovery Center.  “To be able to develop a Sea Turtle Rescue center here in Essex County and help the very animals after which our zoo is named will provide a great resource to the animal rescue community and fill a great need”, says County Executive Joe DiVincenzo.

The Sea Turtle Recovery Center will be located next to the Sea Lion Sound exhibit.  It will feature five recovery tanks, a “head start” display for cold-stunned juvenile turtles, and areas to support and rehabilitate sick turtles, who will be released back into their natural habitats once they’ve gotten healthy.  The facility will be 15,000 square feet in size and will allow visitors close-up views of turtles in the recovery tanks.  The center will also educate visitors on the troubles sea turtle face and how we can help.

Other changes coming to the zoo include a new Savanna Café, a newly reopened African Adventure featuring masai giraffes, and a renovated bison exhibit.

You can visit the zoo seven days a week between the hours of 10 am and 4:30 pm. To visit West Orange, NJ’s Turtle Back Zoo website, click here.
