Things to Do in South Orange NJ

learning to fly

If you are looking for things to do in South Orange NJ, check out Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery for their latest exhibit, “Learning to Fly: A Celebration of Flight and Exploration”. The exhibit commemorates many major anniversaries occurring this year, including the 80th anniversaries of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance and the Hindenburg disaster as well as the anniversary of the satellite, Sputnik, being launched into space by the Soviet Union in 1957. Through historical artifacts and modern art, this exhibit will take a look at flight as innovation, power, competition, and entertainment. The goal of the exhibit is to, “highlight the role that flight has played, not only in New Jersey’s history, but in a wider context that has made it such an integral part of our society today.”

In addition to the exhibit, a “pop-up museum” will feature a temporary exhibit created by those who visit. Visitors are invited to bring a souvenir, object or memory that is related to the exhibit’s flight and exploration theme. The objects brought by visitors will be on display for one day, February 14, from 11 am – 4 pm. This pop-up museum is designed to allow visitors to make connections to flight and exploration from their daily lives.

Seton Hall University is located at 400 S. Orange Avenue, South Orange, New Jersey, 07079. The Walsh Gallery is open 10:30am to 4:30pm, Monday – Friday.
