South Mountain Conservancy Reveals New Sculptures at Wildflower Sculpture Park

The Millburn Short Hills, Summit NJ area offers something for everyone! On August 7, five new outdoor sculptures were unveiled at the South Mountain Conservancy Wildflower Sculpture Park. Last year, the Wildflower Sculpture Park was inaugurated to introduce art into the landscape of the South Mountain Reservation.

An open call for artists to submit ideas was conducted and three artists were selected.

Michelle Vitale Loughlin created “Tornado”. This sculpture is made of nylon rope and measures 24-ft tall by 18-ft wide. As time passes, the artist will document changes that occur to her sculpture. The intention is for the piece to collect leaves and other material as it stands in the reservation. Michelle has 15 years of education experience and has been featured in various publications, such as Interweave Knits, Embroidery Magazine, and Surface Design Journal.

Eric Beckerich is a resident of Maplewood. His design consists of a 7-ft 6 in column of stacked cubes made of mortar. The simple design of the top cube plays with light and creates shadows. The same concept is repeated in the cubes below and allows the composition to become more dynamic and compressed. Eric has had his work on display at various venues throughout the area, and he has participated in the South Orange-Maplewood Artist’s Studio Tour since 2008.

“Don’t Sing to Me Anymore, Cicada” was designed specifically for South Mountain Reservation by Jersey City resident Roger Sayre and New York resident Charlotte Becket. The sculpture features a series of hammocks strung between two trees, ascending into the treetops. Sayre has had solo exhibits at such places as A.M. Richards Fine Arts in Brooklyn and Carnegie Melon in Pittsburgh. Becket has had her work featured in such places as RuSalon in Brooklyn and Crisp Gallery in London.
