New Jersey Monthly ranks the top New Jersey public high schools every other year. Leflein Associates, an independent research company in Ringwood, New Jersey, compiles the rankings. The 2014 rankings are based on 2012-2013 school year data reported to the NJ Department of Education. Items that are considered in the rankings include student/teacher ratio; student results on the SAT, HSPA and AP or IB tests; and graduation rates.

Two new factors are included in the rankings this year. The SAT performance score is based on the percentage of students scoring 1,550 or better on the annual tests. The Deparment of Education says using this benchmark is “associated with a high likelihood of college success.” Also, the Student Outcomes score includes “post-secondary enrollment”. This number is based on the percentage of students enrolled in a two- or four-year college at least 16 months after high school graduation. New Jersey Monthly editor, Ken Schlager, said these factors were added to help in identifying which high schools are doing the best preparing its students to be successful in college.
