Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” list ranked Millburn, NJ High School number 13 in the country for college readiness! Schools on this list are ranked solely on performance. vs. schools on “Beating the Odds” list, which ranks schools based on performance while also accounting for student poverty rates.

The rankings were based on public high schools proficiency rates on standardized state level math and reading/language arts assessments. “For the absolute list, the index was used to identify high schools that perform at or above the 70th percentile within each state. For the relative list, the index was used to identify high schools that perform 0.5 standard deviations or more than their state’s average when accounting for students’ socioeconomic status as reflected by the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.”

From there, Newsweek surveyed the schools that were ranked on both lists for data regarding college-readiness. Six criteria were used to create a weighted College Readiness Index. The criteria was:

•College Enrollment Rate—25 percent
•Graduation Rate—20 percent
•Weighted AP/IB/Dual Enrollment composite—17.5 percent
•Weighted SAT/ACT composite—17.5 percent
•Student Retention (change in student enrollment between 9th and 12th grades; this measure is intended to control for dropout rates)—10 percent
•Counselor-to-Student Ratio—10 percent.

Millburn, NJ High School scored the following:

“93.5% in terms of college readiness, 100% in terms of graduation rate, 99.5% in terms of college-bound rate, and 1.3% in terms of poverty. Its counselor-student ratio is 1:216; its student retention rate is 98.1%; its SAT/ACT composite score is 74.7; its average SAT score is 1897; its average ACT score is 27; its AP/IB/Dual enrollment composite is 87.3; the average AP score is 4.47; its average IB score is ; and its dual enrollment participation is 1%. Newsweek deemed Millburn High School as helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments.”
