Montclair Art Museum first opened in 1914. Located just 12 miles from NYC, the Montclair Art Museum is located in the same building in which it first opened, although it has now been expanded three times! The museum welcomes over 65,000 visitors each year. The museum is well known for its American and Native American art, its family and public programs, its exhibits, and its art school.

The Montclair Art Museum is known as being one of the country’s first art museums that primarily collected American art. It is also one of the first art museums dedicated to learning more about and gathering a significant Native American art collection. In 2010, the museum launched a Contemporary Art Program. In Spring 2015, the museum presented, “Come as You Are: Art of the 1990′s”. This is the museum’s largest collection of modern art to-date.

When the museum first opened, it began building its collection via gifts from prominent Montclair residents. The George Inness Gallery is dedicated to the works of Montclair landscape artist and resident George Inness, who spent the last nine years of his life in Montclair, where he was inspired by the local landscape.

The museum now has a collection of over 12,000 pieces. “The Museum’s superb holdings of traditional and contemporary American Indian art and artifacts, New Jersey’s largest, represent the cultural achievements in weaving, pottery, wood carving, jewelry, and textiles oindigenous Americans.” Learn more by visiting the Montclair Art Museum website.

The museum offers several public and family programs, serving everyone from toddlers to senior citizens. Coming up this weekend, 3/19, from 5-7 pm, the museum is offering “Building Montclair in Lego”. Participants will work with architect Stephen W. Schwartz to recreate specific Montclair buildings, through the use of over 60,000 Lego blocks. This event is presented by Montclair History Center and the Montclair Art Museum in conjunction with Building Blocks Workshops. LEGO is a trademark of the LEGO Group. Participants must register in advance online. The price is $35 per family, for up to 4 people. At least one person in the group must be an adult.
