Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills, NJ Teaches Kids About Volunteering

The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills, NJ Inc’s “Kids for Kids” program showed kids on 11/16/2013 what it means to be a volunteer. More than 200 kids, ages 6 and up, gathered at the George Bauer Community Center in Millburn, NJ’s Taylor Park, for the second “Kids for Kids” day!

Children participated in several activities including making bookmarks and sorting books into grade levels. The books will be donated to elementary schools in the Oranges. There were several “stations” set up throughout the event. Among the activities at the Family Intervention Services tables was making placemats and Thanksgiving decorations that will be donated to seniors in the area. The children also assisted in making Dental Bonus Bags, Mitten Bonus Bags, and Snack Bags. In addition, they sold cookies, and the money raised will be donated to the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

There was also an “Opportunity Project Table” where the children decorated a box that will be used to collect helmet donations. While there, they also learned about how important it is to wear a helmet if they are bicycling or skateboarding.

Members of the Millburn, NJ High School Key Club, JLOSH members and parents all helped the children with their various activitties.

The Kids for Kids day kicked off the 2013-2014 contest that asks for the most creative idea that answers “What would you do to better your community?” The contest awards $100 to the winner!
