Spring Lawn Care Tips

seeding a lawn

Everyone wants a great looking yard all year long! Follow these Spring lawn care tips from HGTV.com and you are sure to get just that!

  1. Dethatch with a Rake-Clean away dead grass to discourage pests and disease.  A thin layer of thatch is ok, but anything more than 1/2 inch will smother your lawn.
  2. Test the Ph Level of Your Soil-The ideal balance level is between 5 and 7 depending on the grass type.
  3. Aerate Your Lawn-Aerating your lawn loosens the soil allowing roots to grow and water and nutrients to be better absorbed.
  4. Weed and Feed-Late Spring is the best time to weed and feed, but don’t treat your entire lawn if you don’t need to.  Too many chemicals can stress the plant’s roots.
  5. Deal with Bare Spots-To get rid of bare spots, flush the area with water, rake out dead grass, level the area with sand or soil, and then reseed.
  6. Seed the Lawn-Early Spring is a good time for seeding.
  7. Know Your Varieties-Knowing what type of sunlight you get, how committed you are to taking care of your lawn, and the types of temperatures you have in your area all contribute to the knowing the best seed type for you.
  8. Water it Well-All grass needs water.  A sprinkler on a timer does the trick!
  9. Maintain Your Mower-Fresh gas, fresh spark plugs and sharp blades are a must for your mower.
  10. Avoid Short Cuts-Cutting your grass too short is not good for it.  HGTV says a good rule of thumb is not to cut more than the top third of the blade off the grass.
  11. Mow in Varied Directions-”By mowing in varied directions you ensure a more uniform cut, an upright growth pattern and reduce soil compaction.”
  12. Leave the Clippings-If you follow the rule of only cutting 1/3′s worth of the blade, then leaving the clippings is a great natural mulch for your yard.

Spring is a great time to take care of your yard, and it is also a great time to sell! If you are thinking of selling, contact us! We’d love to meet with you. Deserted Village Berkeley Heights, NJ

deserted village

Located in the Berkeley Heights, NJ section of the Wachtung Reservation sits the Deserted Village of Feltville. Many Berkeley Heights NJ residents don’t know about this fascinating little piece of history. Eight homes, a general store/church building, and carriage house are spread out along Cataract Hollow Road, a dead-end park off of Glenside Ave. Over the past 300 years, this area has served as a farming community, a mill town, a deserted village, and a summer resort. Three families still live in this “deserted village” which is visited by thousands of people every year.

This land was first inhabited by Peter Willcocks in 1736. He used the land to build a sawmill to produce lumber that the farmers would need as they settled into the area.

About a century later in 1845, David Felt purchased 760 acres and built a printing factory. In addition, David built a town to support the mill, and 175 people were living in Feltville by 1850. After he retired in 1860, others tried to open more businesses, but none of them survived and for a short period of time the town became deserted.

Warren Ackerman purchased the property in 1882 and turned the town into Glenside Park, a summer resort. Glenside Park closed in 1916 when the beginnings of what is now known as the Jersey Shore replaced the mountain resort in popularity.

Shortly thereafter, the Union County Park System formed and turned this area into the Wachtung Reservation. This is one of our country’s first county parks. The Deserted Village has remained, and is now open for visitors to explore every day from dawn to dusk. There are ten surviving buildings to see. For more information, click here.

What a beautiful time of year it is to visit the lovely gardens at the Van Vleck House and Gardens Montlair NJ. Located at 21 Van Vleck Street, the Van Vleck House and Gardens originated over 140 years ago. In 1968, Joseph Van Vleck Sr, a successful businessman, moved his family from Brooklyn NY to Montclair when he had a grand vision of building a country estate surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds. That is what he did on the 12-acres that would come to be known as the Van Vleck House and Gardens.

Many homes have been on the grounds throughout the years, but the Van Vleck’s Italianate villa is the only home that remains. The heirs of the Van Vleck family gifted the house and grounds to the Montclair Foundation in 1993.

Over the past 20 years, the public has been able to enjoy the lovely, serene space offered by the Van Vleck House and Gardens thanks to the support of donors and volunteers. The gardens are open every day of the year from dawn until dusk. The house offers a center for non-profit groups to hold retreats, meetings, and fundraisers.

The Van Vleck House and Gardens is host to many events throughout the year. Maria from the Shannon Aronson team has attended a great Mother’s Day celebration there which included a quartet playing as guests picnic and stroll through the gardens. Maria says the Van Vleck House and Gardens is a wonderful place to picnic, walk the grounds, and take some pictures and the flowers are amazing!

Upcoming events include Fête des Fleurs on Thursday, May 11 from six until eight o’clock p.m., which allows guests premier access to choice blooms while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the garden. Over Mother’s Day weekend, enjoy the Van Vleck House & Gardens’ 14th Annual Plant Sale. The sale will be open to the public on Friday, May 12th, and will continue through Wednesday, May 17th.
